A beginning designer is looking for a place to upload their cases. Behance and Dribbble are the largest websites for publishing designs. Let’s find out the difference.

Accessibility for uploading projects

Behance

Behance is a public platform, where anyone can register and upload their cases. You can create a portfolio on Behance at any time — it immediately becomes available to viewers from all over the world.

Dribbble

What was Dribbble created for? The platform was designed and launched as a private, invite-only website, where the best designers from all over the world reveal a shot or progress to get feedback on their work. Without even realizing it, the founders created a database of excellent designers, and users started using the platform as a portfolio.

Areas of use

Behance

You can find a wide variety of projects from different areas of design on Behance: from architecture, fashion and art direction to branding, illustrations, photography, motion graphics, UI/UX, product design, graphic design, to name just the most popular categories. You can search by tags and choose a specific category to narrow down the search to the topic of your interest.

Dribbble

Illustrations, animation, UI/UX and web design make up most of the projects available on Dribbble. You cannot select a category, but a search by tags is available. That is why you should carefully consider the list of tags to add to your shots.

How to promote

If you are thinking about promoting your cases and services on the websites, you can study these articles:

Search for projects

Behance

Behance allows viewing projects, people, teams and collections. In addition to filtering the results by category, you can also filter the cases you want to view by geolocation or popularity.

Examples:

● most often rated cases,

● most viewed cases,

● most discussed cases,

● most recently uploaded cases, or

● cases uploaded only in a specified time interval.

Dribbble

You can rotate cases on Dribbble by popularity (most recently uploaded, most discussed and most viewed). You can also view cases by their type: from beginners, teamwork, animated GIFs, cases with attachments, etc.

Adding a project

Behance

Behance allows uploading finished, detailed cases of good quality. This eventually led to the rules of good form on the website: to demonstrate the entire project, to describe the concept and the process of its creation, even to add video with animations — overall, the project presentation has become a type of art. This is an example of a great presentation:

Dribbble

Viewers can take a look at the project without seeing it in full. Dribbble is focused on showing previews of 400×300px, 800×600px or 1,600×1,200px, which means that designers and illustrators do not upload their work in full, but only a part of it. It can be accents in layouts, interesting effects, animation or just parts of projects they work on. Up to 24 shots can be uploaded per month on a regular account, and up to 48 shots can be uploaded on a team account. The paid version of Dribbble Pro allows to reveal detailed cases and to add attachments, videos, descriptions, etc.

Display in general search

Behance

Behance allows to upload the case previews of a specific size. Unlike Dribbble, this can only be a static image, and you can see the full description and features in the detailed presentation of the project.

Dribbble

On Dribbble, the emphasis is on previews: no unnecessary information, which is very attractive. Besides, the preview can be animated — just hover over it.

Interaction between users

Behance

Behance allows rating projects even if you haven’t signed up. Once you have signed up, you can leave comments and post links to other users using the @ symbol. Direct messages to any of the authors or messages to a group of up to 10 people become available as well. There are limits on the number of messages to avoid spam (they appear if you send too many messages of the same type simultaneously). You can subscribe or unsubscribe to any author, but there is a limit of 2,500 people — you will not be able to subscribe to more users.

Dribbble

Comments under cases are only available to verified users, or players. However, this is not necessary if you only want to subscribe to authors or rate their cases. You can contact any designer about the work on Dribbble, but you need to sign up for this. You will be able to send 3 free messages after this. They take spam very seriously, so if you decide to ask someone for an invite to the website in a private message, you will lose even these privileges.

Looking for a job or hiring

You can find a job, both full-time and remote, on both platforms. The main difference is for those who are hiring.

Behance

You can publish vacancies in the Talent section for free.

All messages among the users are free, but there is a daily limit. You can use the All Apps subscription for additional features: it costs $52.99 per month and allows accessing 20+ Adobe apps. There’s also a $79.99/month Creative Cloud subscription for teams that’s perfect for agencies and design teams.

Dribbble

There are 2 subscriptions on Dribbble: Pro https://dribbble.com/pro (for individual use) for $12 per month and Pro Business (for advanced freelancers, agencies and teams) for $20 per month.

The Pro plan will add the ability to upgrade your profile and shots publication (add video, multi-frame, attachments, and functions for selling the case).

The Pro Business plan, in addition to the Pro plan features, will allow to access the Project Board, create team profiles, access the Vacancies section and get priority placement in job listings.

You should remember that you can only contact the designers who have indicated their skills and job opportunities in their profiles.

Conclusion

Behance is convenient for describing large projects. In this case, not only the result is important, but also the process, as well as a thoughtful and elegant presentation of each project (case). Due to the publicity of the service, it is more common among customers looking for a designer. A link to your portfolio on Behance would be a great advantage for your resume.

The advanced Dribbble features, such as comments, is available via invite and paid subscriptions. The website is more private, but it allows getting feedback and comments from experienced designers. It is easier to present the case here, since you do not need to visualize it: just upload one design shot, add a short description and some tags.

Remember that you need to upload your cases on both websites in order to receive as many orders from customers and as much feedback from experienced designers as possible and participate in interesting projects: this increases your chances of success proportionally.

Betop.me is a service for boosting likes, views, comments and followers on Behance, Dribbble and other platforms for designers. You can also complete tasks from other users, earn coins and get promoted for free.
